AIR POLLUTION

10 years of industrial growth fouls the air at Dianshan Lake. Considered almost pollution-free just 10 years ago, following a steep rise in industrial development in the area, the lake’s monitoring station now frequently records some of the highest concentrations of PM2.5 particles in the city. Officials accused of GM crops cover-up. Agriculture officials in Hainan have been accused of trying to suppress evidence that genetically modified crops have been grown illegally on the southern island province. China, Shanghai Daily 2 April 2014.

18 detained in protest over PX project. Police detained 18 people for public order offences during a protest against a chemical plant project in south China's Guangdong Province. China, Shanghai Daily 3 April 2014.

Protests show growing concern over environment. More than 1,000 locals have protested in front of Maoming's government building, in scenes that reflect growing public opposition across China to projects deemed dangerous or polluting. China, China Daily, 3 April 2014.

Beijing mulls tax waiver and more subsidies for green car users. Vice-Premier Ma Kai, in remarks made recently in Shenzhen, said that  the central government is mulling further incentives to boost the usage of new energy cars. China, South China Morning Post, 3 April 2014.

ENVIRONMENT

China halts logging in NE forests to restore ecosystem. Chinese forestry authorities on Tuesday shut down commercial logging in two major forests in the northeastern-most part of the country in a bid to help restore the ecosystem. China, Shanghai Daily 1 April 2014.

TECHNOLOGY

Aobo Group Introduces Energy-saving Opportunities for Farmers and Growers. A glass manufacturer in Handan, in Hebei province, has attracted attention for its efforts to nurture plants through the application of an LED light source integrated with transparent glass. WATER

Quenching the Thirst. According to the State Council's Office of the SNWD Project Commission, after 10 years of construction the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) Project is set to start supplying water later this year. China, Beijing review 31 March 2014.

ENERGY

New clean energy reserve found in China. Geologists have found large masses of hot dry rock (HDR), a form of clean energy, in northwest China's Qinghai Province, authorities said Monday. China, Beijing News 31 March 2014.
