Xi lays down red lines for Yangtze River development

Chinese President Xi Jinping yesterday called for achieving high-quality economic growth through developing the Yangtze River economic belt. Ecological restoration should be the top priority, he said, noting China’s mother river must be protected, and any exploitation that is destructive to the environment must be forbidden.

Air pollution alarm system adjusted

Shanghai has adjusted its four-tier air pollution alarm system by lowering the criteria for alarm activation. Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau has pledged to issue alarms at least one day ahead of serious pollution occurring to enable citizens to better make preparations.

China attains most of its environment protection targets for 2017

China has attained most of its environment protection goals for 2017, according to the country's ecology and environment minister. However, the share of good air quality days throughout the whole year for China's prefectural-and-above level cities and the surface water quality still fell short of targets.

Chinese bike-sharing service ofo welcomed in India

Chinese bike-sharing company ofo received more than 1.1 million orders in India in the first quarter in 2018. "India has a huge population, and with the worsening of urban problems like environmental pollution and traffic congestion, India needs more environmentally-friendly public transport solutions," said Dexter Sim, who is in charge of ofo's business in India.

Footloose residents thrilled with greenway

The 4-kilometre long Huangpu River greenway is a tribute to the Shanghai’s ambitions to become a people-friendly, eco-friendly city. Seven themed parks line the greenway, including the azalea, China rose, rock and herb parks. Together, the parks harbor 160 varieties of plants from cherry and lilies to golden rain and ginkgo trees.

Xiongan was born to be a city of green areas, a city of the people and a city of the future. “There are no other metropolises where vegetation and water cover 70 percent of the total area as planned in Xiongan,” said Wu Hequan, an expert on Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Sorting garbage means sorting out mindsets

Huali Jiazu is the first Shanghai residential community with expat households to trial such a garbage-sorting program, which began on March 30. Neighborhood committee officials and property management staff prepared the groundwork by distributing multilingual brochures about garbage sorting to residents and holding meetings with them to discuss garbage classifications of wet, dry, recyclable and harmful.

China, Mongolia to strengthen ties
