Water

China to launch river, lake protection campaign

China will stage a campaign to address salient problems damaging or polluting its rivers and lakes in the second half of the year. The campaign consists of four operations with two concerning illegal shorefront occupation and solid waste disposal along the Yangtze River.

World Bank Loan to Help Chinese City Handle Floods, Pollution

The project will reduce flood risks along a river by connecting the main stream to tributaries, improving flood drainage capacity, removing obstructions, and upgrading mainstream infrastructure. Water pollution will also be reduced as a new sewage treatment plant and associated facilities will be built to separate wastewater from rainwater and achieve better treatment.

Beijing caps population of sub-center at 1.3m

Beijing is shifting some of its administrative functions out of the city center into Tongzhou to help address "urban ills" including traffic congestion and air pollution. The move is also part of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integrated development plan.

China's Top Legislator Inspects Enforcement of Air Pollution Control Law

The inspection team led by top legislator Li Zhanshu visited several cities in Henan, and inspected the provincial environmental protection department, enterprises, villages, construction sites, pollution monitoring stations and electric-bus charging stations. When inspecting local enterprises, Li urged them to speed up transformation and upgrading, and pursue green development.

Car manufacturers have made great achievements in developing batteries that allow greater range. New energy vehicles capable of a range of 400 km and above on one charge came into the market earlier this year. To promote the industry, the Chinese Government issued a policy providing subsidies for manufacturers and purchasers.

With the arrival of a new revolution in science and technology, these development strategies share many things in common. There exists considerable scope for cooperation between China, South Korea, and Japan in renewable energy and environmental protection, technological innovation, high-end manufacturing and the sharing economy.

Ecology

Chinese auditors uncover problems in Yangtze River economic belt

Between December 2013 and January 2018, approximately 10% of specially designated funds were misused for non-environmental protection purposes. Also, 197 projects for pollution control and rehabilitation of the ecology in 10 provinces were not started or completed as scheduled, while 19 projects in five provinces failed to achieve the objectives upon completion as designed.

Up and Running

Early June, the new Ministry of Ecology and Environment bared its teeth on the governments of three localities after concluding that they had not taken strong enough measures to correct environmental problems exposed during earlier inspections. The ministry summoned their leaders and demanded they rectify the situation.

China Calls for Better Efforts by Courts on Environment Protection

China's Supreme People's Court issued a guideline asking courts at all levels to exercise better judicial functions in environmental cases to contribute to the building of a more ecologically aware society. "The courts should act professionally in trials to ensure the ultimate protection of the ecological environment, as well as the ecological damage compensation and accountability system," the guideline said.

New FTZ Area Set Up for Hainan

Hainan, China's southernmost province, has established a new benchmark area to promote development of the China (Hainan) Pilot Free Trade Zone, it was announced on June 3. It will have two parts: a 106-sq-km ecological region boasting a key national wetland natural reserve, and 192 sq km that will serve both industrial and urban purposes.
