Legislation protecting drinking water not sufficient, claims NPC rep

China's current legislation protecting drinking water lacks necessary regulations specifically related to safety, according to National People's Congress (NPC) Representative and Deputy Research Director of Jiangxi's Water Conservation Bureau, Shi Qionghua. Recent water pollution incidents have made it clear that China must introduce safety legislation and strengthen the protection of drinking water sources.

Shi explains that the 1989 regulations regarding drinking water source protection and pollution management stipulations and measures are already unable to meet safety guarantees that residents demand. Shi suggests the biggest problems right now are that management mechanisms are not sound, and management tasks and responsibilities are not clearly defined.
